AceShowbiz - Singer Akon is stepping into finances with the launch of a cryptocurrency called Akoin in Senegal.

The star's new company will be in operation in two weeks and comes as he works to bring solar power to Africa as part of his Lighting Africa project.

The Beautiful hitmaker, born Aliaune Thiam, hopes the venture, an internet based form of currency, will further aid the continent economically.

"I think that blockchain and crypto could be the saviour for Africa in many ways because it brings the power back to the people and brings the security back into the currency system and also allows the people to utilise it in ways where they can advance themselves and not allow government to do those things that are keeping them down," Akon said during a panel, where he announced the venture, at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in France on Tuesday, June 19.

Akon, who is a Senegal native, plans to create a "100 per cent crypto-based city" on 2,000 acres of land provided by the Senegalese President.
