AceShowbiz - Mindy Kaling was stunned when an interviewer recently questioned her ability to play a jeweller in a movie because she's never been married.

The actress portrays jewellery maker Amita in upcoming heist flick Ocean's 8, a spin-off of Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's trilogy, which follows a group of women who plan on robbing the Met Gala in New York City.

"Ocean's 8" also features Sandra Bullock as a professional thief, Anne Hathaway as an actress and Rihanna as a technical genius, but during an interview on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" on Thursday night (May 24), Mindy shared that a reporter at a press event in Europe queried how she could possibly play a diamond expert.

"Mindy, you play a jeweller. Now, you are not married and have never been engaged, so how do you know about diamonds? Cause it's all about diamonds and stealing diamond necklaces," she recalled of the interviewer's question, before going on to explain that she couldn't help but feel rather offended. "So, he was basically like, 'How, you, a famous spinster? How would you - you've never been anywhere near a diamond before. No man has ever - as though if you're not married and engaged, you've never seen a diamond.'"

TV host Seth then stated that the reporter seemed to have a "fundamental misunderstanding" of acting, to which Mindy replied: "He was so incredulous. He was like, 'I can't put this together! No man has ever loved you!'"

Mindy, 38, gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Katherine in December. She is yet to reveal the identity of the baby's father and at the time of her pregnancy was not romantically linked to anyone publicly.

During the interview, "The Mindy Project" star also discussed what it was like to film at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the Met Gala is held, at night.

But she divulged that her character doesn't get to actually attend the bash, and in fact, has much less glamorous duties.

"Without giving too much away, Sandy is looking beautiful, and Anne is looking beautiful, and I'm literally washing dishes," she smiled.
