The 'Heroes' alum says Jack's past as a soldier in Vietnam resonates with him personally as his father is a two tour Vietnam vet.

AceShowbiz - Milo Ventimiglia wanted to honor his war veteran father in the upcoming series of "This Is Us". The actor portrays father-of-three Jack Pearson on the TV series, which also stars Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, Justin Hartley and Susan Kelechi Watson.

Shooting on the third season of the program will begin in July and during an appearance on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" on Monday, May 14, Milo divulged that the plot will now explore Jack's past as a soldier in Vietnam through a series of flashbacks, something which resonated personally.

"My Dad's a two tour Vietnam vet. When I was younger, I'd always ask him for stories and everything. He was very candid about his experience," he said. "And when I knew that was the road we were going to travel on for Jack, I wanted to know more (about) the feeling, the understanding of what it is to be in the theater of war. What you take from that experience and what you try to leave behind in a situation that's so horrible."

Milo went on to explain that he once went on a trip to nations such as Iraq and Afghanistan to meet with U.S. troops. And he hopes the show and his discussions on the topic will open up conversations regarding veteran health and wellbeing.

"You're experiencing this visceral thing and you're seeing the beat-up faces of these soldiers, sailors and Marines. And you get home, and no one else really remembers that there is a war... It was just one of those things where I wanted to, in the duty of being an American citizen, as well as kind of honouring my father and what his generation experienced, acknowledge soldiers that are coming home. Like, 'Hey, we see you,'" the 40-year-old added.
