The father-of-two shares on Instagram a black-and-white photo of himself jumping while topless.

AceShowbiz - "American Horror Story" star Cheyenne Jackson is celebrating five years sober. The former "Glee" actor took to Instagram on Thursday, May 10 to mark the milestone, admitting his journey to clean-living hasn't been a smooth ride.

"FIVE YEARS SOBER," the father-of-two captioned a black-and-white snap of himself jumping while topless.

"Over this time I've experienced more highs and lows than I sometimes thought I could take," he wrote. "The passing of friends, family strife, life disappointments, fear, anxiety, envy, people-pleasing, fatigue, and ultimately, the birth of my beloved (twins) Ethan and Willow followed closely by the death of my beautiful father. Yet through it all, I stayed sober no matter what."

Cheyenne continued, "I felt every twinge, every splinter, every heartache. It didn't break me. I was present for my life and present for those in my life, and for that I am so grateful. Nothing changes if nothing changes. #ProgressNotPerfection."

The 42-year-old, who shares his children with husband Jason Landau, previously opened up about his addiction issues, admitting he was such a "high-functioning alcoholic", he was able to keep his substance abuse a secret from his family and friends.

"Practically nobody knew, not even my parents," he told NBC New York in 2014. "I always showed up, I knew my lines, I looked OK. I always felt like I was missing out. That's why I drank and did drugs. I always felt like there was a party I hadn't been to, or 'Oh, where is everybody going now?'."

Jackson confessed he worried about turning his back on his wild behaviour, because he was convinced it would spell the end of his social life.

"But I realised, I'm going to be more fun because I'll do the same stuff but I'll remember it...," he recalled. "I've been to every party, met everybody I wanted to meet and done everything I wanted to do. It's time to just grow up and be accountable and have some integrity."

And coming clean about his troubles felt like a huge weight off Cheyenne's shoulders: "(Now) I have no secrets about it," he said. "No shame."
