According to a source, the late actor was placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold after doctors determined that he required a mental evaluation.

AceShowbiz - "Austin Powers" star Verne Troyer had reportedly been placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold prior to his death on Saturday, April 21. The actor had long struggled with a booze problem and was hospitalized for possible alcohol poisoning earlier this month, following an incident at his home in Los Angeles.

According to The Blast, the 49-year-old remained under doctors' care until his passing, after medics determined he required a mental evaluation. His family members are said to have become concerned the health emergency was the result of a suicide attempt.

A cause of death has yet to be determined, but officials at the L.A. County Department of the Medical Examiner are due to conduct an autopsy next week.

The news emerge hours after actress Mindy Sterling revealed she had been left "devastated" by the death of her "Austin Powers" co-star. "I heard about it a couple hours ago. I was just devastated," the 64-year-old told Us Weekly while attending the 2018 CATsravaganza event in Hollywood.

Heaping praise on the late actor, who portrayed Mini-Me in 1999's "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" and its sequel "Austin Powers in Goldmember", she shared, "I can only say that it was such a pleasure to work with him. He was really one of the sweetest and most gifted and talented men I've known. He worked so hard on everything that he was given. He was such an addition to 'Austin Powers' and the family."

"It's very sad to see him struggle and go through whatever he went through, and then to die," continued Sterling, who played Frau Farbissina in the Mike Myers comedy franchise. "It's really young, but I know that he had some medical stuff that he always really had to work through. I just hope that he is at peace, and I want him to know how much he was loved and revered and how he was respected in the business."

Myers led the tributes to Troyer after the news hit headlines, remembering his pal as "the consummate professional and a beacon of positivity". He added, "It is a sad day, but I hope he is in a better place. He will be greatly missed."
