After ruling out directing 'The Equalizer' sequel, the director is reportedly back in talks to helm Universal's new re-imagining of the classic outlaw tale.

AceShowbiz - Antoine Fuqua is once again up to tackle Universal's new re-imagining of "Scarface". According to a new report from Deadline, after ruling out directing "The Equalizer" sequel, the filmmaker is back in talks to helm the third theatrical version of the classic outlaw tale.

Fuqua was previously involved with the project but dropped out over a year ago. While the 52-year-old helmer has not yet signed a deal, sources tell the news outlet that discussions are going well after Fuqua met with studio executives last week.

The latest draft of the script has been written by "Suicide Squad" director David Ayer, Jonathan Herman and four-time Academy Award winners Joel & Ethan Coen ("No Country for Old Men", "Fargo"). Ayer was previously in talks to direct but exited the project due to his take on the classic gangster pic reportedly being too dark.

The new "Scarface" is a re-imagining not just of the 1983 remake, but the 1932 original as well. Rather than setting the story in Miami, the remake will take place in Los Angeles and follow a Mexican immigrant rather than a Cuban.

Diego Luna ("Rogue One: A Star Wars Story", "Narcos") was originally attached to take on the lead role. However, with the delay in the film's production which has resulted in potential scheduling conflicts, his involvement is now uncertain.

The film will be a Bluegrass Films and Global Produce production. Marc Shmuger, Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark will produce with Marty Bregman, producer of the 1983 "Scarface" from director Brian De Palma, returning to produce as well. Executive vice president of production Jon Mone and VP of production Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for Universal.

The studio originally set the "Scarface" remake to be released in the United States on August 10 this year. However, the film has since lost its release date and remains undated.
