The Rian Johnson-directed 'Star Wars' film remains No. 1 at the North American box office for the four-day New Year's holiday weekend, holding off 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle'.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" is still the champ at the North American box office for the four-day New Year's holiday weekend despite steep competition from Sony's "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle". The Rian Johnson-directed "Star Wars" film collects an additional $68.4 million, bringing its domestic total to $533.1 million.
Globally, "The Last Jedi" has passed $1 billion mark since its release earlier last month. It is currently the fourth fastest to do so, trailing behind "Furious 7", "Jurassic World" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". But "The Last Jedi" is the second fastest to do so without the help of China, behind its predecessor "The Force Awakens".
"Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" finishes second at the four-day weekend box office. Outperforming expectations, the game-based adventure movie starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jack Black and Kevin Hart is coming strong with an estimated $66.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $185.7 million. The film has also performed well internationally, racking up $350 million worldwide.
Holdovers "Pitch Perfect 3", "The Greatest Showman" and "Ferdinand" are rounding out the top five. The third "Pitch Perfect" movie remains at No. 3 with an additional $22.7 million, the Hugh Jackman-starring musical stays at No. 4 with approximately $20.7 million, while the animated comedy rounds is in the fifth place and estimated to collect $14.6 million domestically.
In limited release, Paul Thomas Anderson's "Phantom Thread" earns an estimated $299,000 from four theaters after its Christmas opening. The film starring Daniel Day-Lewis as a designer has grossed $531,000 to date.
"As end of year marketplaces go, this is a great time to be a moviegoer," Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst for comScore, previously said. "There are so many movies out there, the only trick is how do you see all of them."
"We actually had a really great end of year surge," Dergarabedian continued . " 'Star Wars' adding about a half billion dollars didn't hurt. But 'Star Wars' didn't do this alone. It's not just about the big movies at the top, it's also about the smaller movies that provided a really great foundation. Every dollar counts."
