'Coco' Tops Box Office for Third Week, 'I, Tonya' Debuts Strong

Without any major new releases this week, 'Coco' easily repeats its victory for the third time as 'I, Tonya' has a strong debut.

AceShowbiz - "Coco" easily topped North American box office for the third week in a row as there was no major new release this week. The animated movie from Disney and Pixar maintained its reign with additional $18.3 million to its domestic income, bringing it to a total of $135.5 million so far.

Major studios have held off from releasing new movies since the Thanksgiving holiday, but "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" is ready to blast through the top of the chart when it opens on December 14. The Disney-Lucasfilm movie is expected to bring in around $200 million in its opening weekend. Other studios have mostly chosen to avoid competing against the sci-fi pic.

"A very strong box office force is about to awaken what has been very quiet month of December as Disney will continue to reign at the top of the charts having owned the top spot with 'Coco' for the past three weeks, a trend that will continue with 'The Last Jedi' as we enter the home stretch of what has truly been a rollercoaster ride of box office ups and downs in 2017," says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore.

Back to this week's chart, "Justice League" was also not shaken up at the second place with approximately $9.6 million (dropping 42.4|percent|). It has collected $212.1 million domestically and crossed the $600 million mark worldwide.

Lionsgate's family film "Wonder" held onto its third place with additional $8.4 million in its fourth week. Crossing the $100 million mark domestically, it's considered a highly profited movie given its $20 million budget.

James Franco's "The Disaster Artist" rose from No. 12 to No. 4 after expanding to 840 venues, up from 19 last weekend. It raked in an estimated $6.4 million in its second week (up 431.3|percent|). "Thor: Ragnarok" was down one place to No. 5 with an estimated $6.3 million.

The only new release in the top 10 this week was "Just Getting Started", which opened to approximately $3.2 million in the tenth spot. Meanwhile, "I, Tonya", based on the true events about figure skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan's rivalry, debuted strong at No. 19 with approximately $245.602 from only four theaters. That's an average of $61,400 per site.
