Savannah Guthrie and Andy Cohen Defend Megyn Kelly Over Awkward Jane Fonda Interview

While Guthrie and Cohen thought there wasn't anything wrong with Kelly's plastic surgery question, they didn't comment on her cringey gay remarks.

AceShowbiz - Megyn Kelly was defended by her "Today" colleague Savannah Guthrie when the latter dropped by Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live". Kelly was shut down earlier this week by Jane Fonda when she asked the 79-year-old actress about her past plastic surgery. Andy Cohen didn't see anything wrong with the question, and Guthrie agreed with him.

"I think she got a bad rap with that Jane Fonda thing, personally," Cohen said. "I would have asked that question. I have asked that question!" Guthrie chimed in, "I've asked that question too! You know, sometimes you ask questions in an interview and, you know, it doesn't ... live TV, there's awkward moments all the time. That's called live TV."

"I think it's great," she went on to gush about Kelly. "I think she's got the eyes of the world upon her and I think everybody can relate to how nerve-wracking that is. But I think she's awesome, I think the show looks fantastic. I mean, it looks beautiful. And we're thrilled to have her. She's doing a lot - she has a lot of different things she can do and I think she's awesome."

Jane Fonda said in a later interview with ET Canada that she was shocked "a little bit" by Kelly's question. "Given the fact that we don't have a lot of time and Bob [her 'Our Souls at Night' co-star Robert Redford] is right here, it's a weird thing to bring up, whether I've had plastic surgery or not. I have and I've talked about it. Seemed like the wrong time and place to ask that question," she explained.

"I think Jane didn't want to go there," Redford commented. "I think she didn't want to have the show turn into about her, her surgery or her look. It was about the quality of the performance." He added, "I wasn't paying a lot of attention."

Besides criticized over her awkward interview with Fonda, Kelly was scrutinized over her cringey comments during a sit-down with "Will & Grace" cast. First, she asked a fan if he became a lawyer and gay because of his love for Eric McCormack's Will Truman. Then, she said, "I don't know about the lawyer thing, but I think the 'Will & Grace' thing and the gay thing is going to work out great!"

While Cohen and Guthrie came to Kelly's defense over her plastic surgery question, the twosome didn't discuss the former FOX anchor's gay comments. Meanwhile, one of the "Will & Grace" stars, Debra Messing, was dismayed by the remarks. "Honestly I didn't know it was [Megyn Kelly] until that morning. The itinerary just said Today Show appearance. Regret going on. Dismayed by her comments," she wrote on Instagram.
