In the quiet solitude of a small Colorado town, two widowed neighbors discover that companionship can arrive unexpectedly in life’s final chapters. Jane Fonda portrays Addie Moore, a woman who bravely proposes an unconventional arrangement to her longtime neighbor, Louis Waters, played by Robert Redford. Seeking to combat the profound loneliness of their nights, she suggests they begin spending them together, platonically, talking and sharing confidences in the dark. What begins as a simple pact for human connection slowly blossoms into a tender and profound relationship, offering them both a second chance at intimacy and joy. Their budding late-life romance, however, must navigate the watchful eyes and whispered judgments of their conservative community, as well as the complicated dynamics of their own families, including Addie’s visiting grandson and Louis’s estranged daughter. Directed by Ritesh Batra, this gentle, heartfelt drama explores the quiet courage it takes to open one’s heart again, proving that love and new beginnings are not reserved for the young.
