Melissa Joan Hart Blasted Over Hurricane Maria Meme and Complaint About Her Ruined Vacation
Celebrity

The 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' alum jokingly urges people to get Maui to stop the hurricane and moans about the natural disaster ruining her vacation to the Caribbean.

AceShowbiz - Melissa Joan Hart came under fire for her tone-deaf Instagram posts about Hurricane Maria. In one post, she complained that the natural disaster ruined her family vacation plans. In another post that also set tongues wagging, she jokingly called on people to get Maui, the demi-god from the movie "Moana", to stop the strong wind and heavy rain.

In the first post, she shared a screenshot of a weather alert that "Maria made landfall on the Caribbean island of the Dominica as a Category 5 hurricane." She offhandedly wrote in the caption, "And just like that, our family vacation is canceled. Such a bummer but we plan to hit the @nickresortpuntacana resort another time this year."

"It's better to be 'bummed' about death, destruction there," one criticized the actress. Another slammed her, "I think you should be more concerned with the people that live there instead of your meaningless vacation."

In the second controversial message, she shared a Hurricane Maria meme that urged people to "find Maui and take back the heart." She added in the caption, "A little light humor, considering the devastation of recent natural events. God be with everyone affected by the storms, earthquakes, fires, droughts, etc."

One quickly responded, "As much as I love Moana. This is not funny at all! I haven't heard from any of my family since Tuesday night. The entire island is without power. All these storms and earthquakes and you want to make jokes. On top of your tweet about your family vacation to Puerto Rico being ruined. B***h please!!"

The former "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" star didn't respond to any of the critics, but the 41-year-old actress deleted the post about her ruined vacation due to the backlash although the screenshot had already made its round on the web. Meanwhile, she kept the meme.

She also wrote a more sympathetic message, "My prayers are with my friends in #Mexico after these devastating earthquakes!!" She also shared a post from fellow actress Salma Hayek, "My thoughts are with all my friends in Puerto Rico and the surrounding islands that are being hit by #hurricaneMaria today."

According to reports, Puerto Rico was completely without power after the hurricane. More than a dozen people died, buildings were destroyed, and there was widespread looting. Dominica government spokesman Charles Jong said they have "gone into survival mode."
