The first teaser trailer for Scott Cooper's "Hostiles" has been released for fans' viewing pleasure. Making its way out online via Deadline, the nearly-2-minute video introduces Christian Bale as Captain Joseph J. Blocker, a legendary Army captain reluctantly agrees to escort a Cheyenne chief and his family through dangerous territory, in the film which is set in 1892.

The teaser also features Rosamund Pike as Rosalie Quaid, a suicidal widow who undertakes the harrowing and perilous journey after the murder of her family on the plains by Comanche indians. She asks Bale's Blocker, "Do you believe in the Lord, Joseph?" He responds, "Yes, I do," before adding, "But, he's been blind to what's been going on around here."

The brooding teaser also shows some violent scenes. It ends with Bale's Blocker says in voiceover, "Understand this, when we lay our heads down, we are all prisoners."

"Hostiles" had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival over the weekend, where it received positive reviews from movie critics after debuting as part of a special tribute to Bale. The "Crazy Heart" and "Out of the Furnace" director's latest directorial effort has yet to land a domestic distribution deal.

The upcoming gritty western drama, which Cooper directed from a script he wrote, is scheduled to hit the Toronto International Film Festival in the coming days. Cooper's last film, "Black Mass", also played at the TIFF. The 47-year-old filmmaker previously worked together with Bale on the 2013 thriller "Out of the Furnace".

"Hostiles" was produced by Cooper along with John Lesher ("Birdman") and Ken Kao ("The Glass Castle"). The period drama also stars Wes Studi, Jesse Plemons, Ben Foster, Rory Cochrane, Timothee Chalamet, Q'orianka Kilcher, Adam Beach, Stephen Lang, Scott Wilson and Bill Camp.
