'Star Wars: Episode IX' Loses Its Director Colin Trevorrow
Movie

Colin Trevorrow is leaving the upcoming 'Star Wars' movie due to creative differences.

AceShowbiz - "Star Wars Episode IX" is facing a setback. Lucasfilm will have to begin the search for a new director as Colin Trevorrow is no longer directing the project, which is set to follow up "Star Wars: The Last Jedi".

Lucasfilm said in a statement released on Tuesday, September 5, "Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on 'Star Wars: Episode IX'. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon."

There had been rumors that the working relationship between Trevorrow and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy was unmanageable. At the time, Trevorrow's passion project "The Book of Henry" was panned by critics and failed at box office.

"Episode IX" script was reportedly a major issue throughout the movie's development. In August, Jack Thorne, who wrote the play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" and the upcoming Julia Roberts-starring movie "Wonder", was hired to rewrite the script.

Kennedy had been through a similar situation with the Han Solo movie, when Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired from their post as director with only a few weeks left in production. Ron Howard was later hired as a replacement and is currently overseeing the re-shoot in London. Kennedy reportedly was not eager to repeat this and tried to avoid making the same decision with Trevorrow.

Following Trevorrow's departure, Rian Johnson who has served behind the lens for "The Last Jedi" has emerged as a possible replacement. Should he be offered the gig, it would reciprocate with Johnson's wish as he once said on Twitter, "I would do another SW movie in a heartbeat. I've had the time of my life."

J. J. Abrams who directed "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is also mentioned as a top contender.
