Warner Bros./DC's upcoming film "Suicide Squad 2" may not be going into production until at least 2018 due to the busy schedule of one of its stars, Will Smith. The news of the "Suicide Squad" sequel production delay is first reported by Variety's reporter Justin Kroll.
The sequel isn't expected to begin production until fall next year at the earliest, as the Deadshot depicter will be busy with other projects in the meantime. Smith will be playing the Genie in Disney's live-action "Aladdin" to be helmed by Guy Ritchie as well as playing an assassin battling his younger clone in Ang Lee's "Gemini Man".
Kroll says via Twitter, "So hearing at the earliest, 'SUICIDE SQUAD 2' won't go in to production until fall 2018 because of Smith's schedule with 'ALADDIN' and 'GEMINI'."

In "Suicide Squad 2", Smith will reunite with Jared Leto and Margot Robbie who are set to reprise their roles as the Joker and Harley Quinn respectively. David Ayer, the filmmaker behind the first film, won't be involved in the sequel and is instead on board to helm one of the two previously-mentioned spin-off films, "Gotham City Sirens".
In addition to the female-driven antihero movie, Warner Bros. and DC are developing a spin-off film focusing on the Joker and Harley Quinn. The untitled Joker and Harley Quinn project is described as a "criminal love story" featuring the crazed lovebirds who are cornerstones in the Batman mythos.
Both Leto and Robbie are expected to return as the on-screen love interests. Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the filmmakers behind 2011's "Crazy, Stupid, Love." and directors and executive producers of the hit NBC drama "This Is Us", are in final negotiations with Warner Bros. to pen the script and direct the film.
"Suicide Squad 2" has yet to set a release date. Plot details are also still kept under tight wraps. The studio continues its search for a director after Jaume Collet-Serra passed on directing the film. It was reported late last month that Collet-Serra had been set by Disney to direct Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's "Jungle Cruise".
