'War for the Planet of the Apes' is the new champion on the weekly domestic chart despite debuting slightly lower than expectations.

AceShowbiz - The Apes scare off Spider-Man at this week's North American box office. "War for the Planet of the Apes" topples "Spider-Man: Homecoming" to claim the champion title, debuting to an estimated $56.5 million.

It was slightly below the expectations of $60-$65 million, but the Matt Reeves-directed movie ended up about the same as 2011's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" which kicked off the modern trilogy with $54.8 million in its opening weekend. "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" (2014) had a bigger opening with $72.2 million.

"First and foremost the movie came in right where we expected it to," says Fox's distribution chief Chris Aronson. Pointing out that the next few weeks would be "soft," he adds, "This movie is going to play the rest of the summer and have a huge multiple."

Earning rave reviews is surely a big advantage for the latest installment of the "Planet of the Apes" movie series. Starring Andy Serkis as Caesar, the movie earned an A- on CinemaScore and was granted 94|percent| fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Former champion "Spider-Man: Homecoming" drops to the runner-up place after a close battle with the newcomer. The movie that marks the beginning of the rebooted franchise adds approximately $45.2 million (dropping 61.4|percent|) in its second weekend, bringing its total domestic gross to $208.3 million so far.

"Despicable Me 3" and "Baby Driver" also lose one spot each, placing third and fourth with approximately $18.9 million and $8.8 million, respectively. "The Big Sick" ascends from No. 8 to No. 5 with an estimated $7.6 million after expanding to 2,597 theaters following a stellar limited run.

Another new offering in the Top 10 this week is "Wish Upon", a horror thriller starring Joey King and Ryan Phillippe. It debuts at No. 7 with an estimated $5.6 million.
