Pixar and Disney's animated flick debuts in the first place at North American box office despite signs of franchise fatigue, dethroning the DC superhero movie which earns an estimated $40.8 million.

AceShowbiz - "Cars 3" lands in the first place in its debut weekend at North American box office. The Pixar and Disney animated flick defeated "Wonder Woman" with an estimated $53.5 million. The third "Cars" movie managed to dominate the domestic box office despite signs of franchise fatigue, though it's the lowest opening for any "Cars" movie.
"We are thrilled with this start and look forward to the balance of the world opening up. 'Cars' continues to be an important franchise for the company and the reaction to this new story and characters is very gratifying," said Disney's distribution president Dave Hollis. "Pixar's consistency is an extraordinary competitive advantage in today's world."
"Wonder Woman" drops to the second place in its third weekend after dominating the chart for two weeks in a row. The DC movie starring Gal Gadot as the titular superheroine earned another $40.8 million for a total domestic cume to $274.6 million. Globally, the Patty Jenkins-directed flick collected a massive $571.8 million.
Landing in the third place is Tupac Shakur biopic "All Eyez on Me". The biopic, which stars Demetrius Shipp Jr. and includes numerous tracks from Tupac's music catalog, was released on what would have been the late rapper's 46 birthday on Friday, June 16. The Benny Boom-directed movie was estimated to collect $27.1 million from 2.471 theaters.
"He is such a huge figure in hip-hop culture," said Codeblack executive VP Quincy Newell. "We were very aggressive about finding hardcore films and making them advocates for this film."
Universal's "The Mummy" follows at No. 4 with approximately $13.9 million in its second weekend, bringing its total domestic cume to $56.5 million. The Tom Cruise-led movie was lagging domestically, but it continues to do solid business internationally, where it won the weekend with $53 million for a total of $239.1 million.
Rounding out the top five is "47 Meters Down". The low-budget shark thriller starring Mandy Moore surprisingly beats fellow female-driven newcomer "Rough Night" with an estimated $11.5 million. Sadly, Sony's raunchy comedy starring Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon and Jillian Bell among others debuts at No. 7 after only collecting an estimated $8 million.
