'Scandal' Bids Farewell to Major Character With Brutal Death
TV

Series creator Shonda Rhimes and the latest casualty have spoken up after the shocking death in the new episode of the ABC series.

AceShowbiz - Death isn't something new on "Scandal", but the latest casualty in the Thursday, April 20 episode is one that you didn't see coming. [SPOILER ALERT!] Gladiators bid farewell to Portia de Rossi's character Elizabeth North in "Trojan Horse", after Lizzie, who acted under the guidance of mysterious organization, failed to convince Mellie to hold on to her place at the White House.

In the episode, Olivia and Co. made it their mission to free Cyrus from prison and make him the next POTUS. Mellie was set to concede. Thus when Mellie rejected any help from the mysterious organization, the Mystery Woman (Zoe Perry) bludgeoned Lizzie to death with a golf club, succeeding Lizzie as Mellie's new Chief of Staff.

The twist was written as de Rossi asked to be let out of her contract. "I am incredibly grateful for my time here at 'Scandal'," she said in a statement. "I will miss playing Elizabeth North, but I've made the decision to focus on a business opportunity. Shonda, Betsy [Beers] and the cast have been incredibly supportive of my decision. I will always love my 'Scandal' family. I'll be watching!"

She explained her decision to Entertainment Weekly, "Actually it was my decision [to leave]. Toward the end of last year, I started an [art curation and publishing] business and I realized that the business was going to be very time-consuming if I was going to make a success of it. I had emailed Shonda [Rhimes] and told her that I had reconnected with my original passion of incorporating business and fine art. I asked her if it would be okay if I could do less shows and perhaps even leave the show."

Series creator Shonda Rhimes also said in a statement, "I have been a fan of Portia's for years and it was an honor to have her join our 'Scandal' family. Portia infused Liz North with a smart, powerful and vulnerable soul while also making the humor sing - and that brought all of us in the writers' room a lot of joy. If I could keep her forever, I would - but kidnapping is illegal. Besides, I am incredibly impressed with the vision she has for her creative future. I wish her all the best."

Ellen DeGeneres took to Twitter to react to her wife's exit from the ABC drama. "I'm proud of my wife for her epic performance on #Scandal. I will miss Lizzie Bear, but I'm glad Portia Bear is sitting right next to me," she posted.

"Scandal" cast members also bid their farewells to de Rossi and her character on the micro-blogging site.

"Scandal" will return with the new episode "Mercy" on Thursday, April 27. Just when Peus' iron grip seems inescapable to Olivia and everyone she holds dear, a shocking threat to the White House turns everything on its head.
