Lady GaGa delivered a breathtaking performance at Super Bowl LI, but some people chose to focus their attention on her stomach. When the 30-year-old singer traded her silver outfit for another number by Versace that consisted of a tummy-baring crop top and sparkling hot pants, people noticed a slight belly roll.
Viewers, mostly men, who expected to see her more toned abdomen, took to social media to slam the singer/songwriter. One of them apparently was designer Stefano Gabbana, one half of Dolce & Gabbana, who then quickly backtracked on his comment and apologized for it, saying that "real bodies" are beautiful.
Style blogger body and positivity activist Katie Sturino said on her Instagram that a man at the Super Bowl party she attended said GaGa "should have lost those extra five pounds to really fit her costume tonight." Bustle writer Alexa Tucker said the people she met at a Super Bowl party said they noticed "a little softness" on GaGa's tummy, but they liked it.
Not bothered by those comments, whether they expressed like or dislike at her body, GaGa took to Instagram on Tuesday, February 7 to silence the body shamers. "I heard my body is a topic of conversation so I wanted to say, I'm proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too," she wrote.
"No matter who you are or what you do. I could give you a million reasons why you don't need to cater to anyone or anything to succeed," she added. "Be you, and be relentlessly you. That's the stuff of champions. thank you so much everyone for supporting me. I love you guys. Xoxo, gaga."
Many of her fans have left positive messages on the comment section. hustle_roses posted, "When I saw that people were body shaming for the performance at the Super Bowl I was infuriated but unfortunately not surprised because of how people are the way that they are today. That performance was stunning and so were you. Your body is flawless but more importantly your music and talent is what makes you. Keep being an inspiration [heart emoji]."
alazar212 also supported GaGa as writing, "you are beautiful and so was your performance! I bet those trolls making fun of you couldn't jump from the top of a stadium easily! You're amazing!"
