Sarah Michelle Gellar Defends Herself After Getting Ridiculed for Her George Michael Tribute

The actress mistook the late star Michael for another '80s singer Boy George, and explained how she mixed them up in a string of Twitter posts shared on Sunday, December 25.

AceShowbiz - Like millions of other people out there, %cSarah Michelle Gellar% was left devastated by the death of %cGeorge Michael%. However, the actress ended up getting ridiculed by her Twitter followers after she posted on the social media Sunday, December 25 her tribute to the late British singer.

Her followers made fun of the actress after she mistook Michael for another '80s singer %cBoy George%. "Do you really want to hurt me? I guess you do 2016 - #ripboygeorge I was truly one of your biggest fans," she wrote.

It didn't take her too long to realize her mistake, thanks to her fans who pointed out that George Michael and Boy George were different guys and that Boy George was still pretty much alive. "Boy George has checked himself into hospital cos of you!" one fan said. "So @SarahMGellar just killed Boy George......I guess she heard someone called George died and picked the first one she could think of," another added.

Gellar quickly deleted the message and then explained the mix-up in some other tweets. "Just as sad when you get the correct information- #ripGeorgeMichael thank you to everyone who corrected me- it's still so sad," she wrote.

"And for the record yes I completely know the difference between Boy George and George Michael- I heard incorrectly. My intentions were good," she continued defending herself, and concluded her clarification, "This is usually why I don't comment on public matters, but it all seemed so sad on Christmas. Lesson learned."

George Michael passed away at the age of 53 in his home in England. "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period," his manager announced in a statement. "The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."

Michael reportedly died of heart failure. In addition to Gellar, a lot of other famous faces including %cEllen DeGeneres%, %cJames Corden%, %cElton John% and %cLeAnn Rimes% have taken to their respective social media pages to say goodbye to the former %cWham!% member.
