AceShowbiz - Nominations for the 48th NAACP Image Awards have been announced, with Nate Parker's "The Birth of a Nation" leading the pack in movie category. The period drama receives six nods including Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Independent Motion Picture as well as Outstanding Writing and Directing for its lead actor Parker.
Joining the race for the Outstanding Motion Picture Award are "Fences", "Hidden Figures", "Loving" and "Moonlight". Meanwhile, Parker will compete for the prize of Outstanding Actor against the likes of Denzel Washington ("Fences"), Don Cheadle ("Miles Ahead"), Stephan James ("Race") and Will Smith ("Collateral Beauty").
"The Birth of a Nation" also helps Aja Naomi King score Outstanding Supporting Actress nomination. Other nominees include Lupita Nyong'o ("Queen of Katwe"), Mo'Nique ("Almost Christmas"), Octavia Spencer" ("Hidden Figures") and Viola Davis ("Fences"). Vying for the Outstanding Actress Award are Angela Bassett, Madina Nalwanga, Ruth Negga, Taraji P. Henson and Tika Sumpter.
Hosted by Anthony Anderson, the 2017 NAACP Image Awards will air live on TV One on Saturday, February 11 at 9 P.M. ET/PT. The full list of TV, music and other nominees can be found on the official site.
