"An American Werewolf in London" remake is officially happening at Universal, with Max Landis attached to pen the script. Deadline brings the words that the 31-year-old screenwriter will also direct the new take on his father John Landis' 1981 classic cult.
Max will executive produce the movie alongside Andy Trapani. The "American Ultra" scribe is teaming up with Skybound Entertainment's Robert Kirkman and David Albert, the creators of "The Walking Dead", who will serve as producers. Also producing will be Todd Garner and Matt Smith.
The original "American Werewolf" starred David Naughton and Griffin Dunne as vacationing college students who backpacked in the English countryside before they were attacked by an unearthly creature. Weeks later, the lone survivor began to see apparitions of his dead friend, who warned him that he was turning into a werewolf.
The film is notable for winning the first Academy Award for Best Makeup, and for helping boost the career of Rick Baker, who was praised for his make-up special effects. The horror comedy movie also spawned a sequel in 1997 titled "An American Werewolf in Paris".
Max made his feature film directing debut in 2015's comedy "Me Him Her". He wrote 2012's "Chronicle" starring Dane DeHaan and is the screenwriter behind BBC America's television adaptation of "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency".
