Natalie Portman's "Jackie", Denzel Washington and Viola Davis' "Fences" and Damian Chazelle's "La La Land" are among the contenders for this year's Oscar race. However, the most unexpected movie to join the race will likely be Sony Pictures' R-rated animated comedy "Sausage Party".

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony plans for a big awards push for the critically well-regarded animation. It will have a November 1 screening and cocktail party at Westwood's iPic Theater, with actor/filmmaker Seth Rogen and one of the film's two directors Conrad Vernon in attendance.

"Academy members are way smarter and more forward thinking than people realize," the studio chief, Tom Rothman, told the site. "They want to recognize bold, original, risky breakthroughs, and that's what 'Sausage Party' is, however subversive. Plus, it's just plain cool."

Rogen, who lent his voice to the main character as well as co-wrote and co-produced the animation, added, "We've never been this passionate about a film and we're thrilled to enter uncharted territory. It's rare you really get to break new ground, and we hope that people view it as a good thing for the medium."

"Sausage Party", which also featured the voices of Salma Hayek, Kristen Wiig, James Franco, Paul Rudd, Bill Hader, Danny McBride and Jonah Hill, is aiming for Best Animated Feature category at Academy Awards 2017.

The animation was released on August 12. It earned a worldwide gross of $135.3 million against its budget of $19 million, making it the most commercially successful R-rated animated film ever.
