Ryan Murphy's "American Crime Story" gets an early renewal, Deadline learns. FX is reportedly so impressed with the script for the show's season 3 that it's immediately picked up for a third installment even though season 2 hasn't got a premiere date just yet.

In the third outing, the true-crime anthology series will focus on Gianni Versace murder by serial killer Andrew Cunanan in 1997. It's based on Maureen Orth's book "Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History".

Before delving into the "Versace/Cunanan" story, the show will tackle Hurricane Katrina first in the second season. President George W. Bush, who took a lot of heat for the poor handling of the 2005 crisis and never recovered politically after the natural disaster, is going to be featured in the sophomore set along with other government officials like Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco.

The show focused on the controversial murder of Nicole Brown Simpson in the first season. Before the story for season 3 was revealed, producer Brad Simpson said they wanted to steer clear of another courtroom drama. "We don't want to repeat ourselves, and that's part of the thing. We did the crime of the century. We like to define crime broadly," he explained.
