While fans were left heartbroken by the death of Harrison Ford's Han Solo in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", J.J. Abrams has shed some light on why Ben Solo a.k.a. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) ended up killing his father. In a commentary clip obtained by USA TODAY, the helmer said that the Sith had no intention on murdering Han when they reunited.
According to Abrams, the masked villain was convinced by his father to walk away from the dark side when the pair met on the bridge in the Starkiller base. "People have asked me if I think that Kylo Ren was just playing with him the whole time, if he meant to kill him from the beginning," Abrams said in the commentary clip, which will be included in 3D collector's edition of the movie.
"And the truth is, I think Kylo Ren, in this moment, is actually being convinced to walk away from this," the 50-year-old director added, "Snoke [portrayed by Andy Serkis] is, as Han says, using him, and I think that somewhere Ben knows this. But I think that he can't accept it. Deep down, he has gone too far."
Driver's Kylo Ren will next be seen in "Star Wars Episode VIII" which is due on December 15, 2017 in U.S. theaters. The movie centers on the story of Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Leia (Carrie Fisher) and other characters as they fight back the force of the First Order.
Meanwhile, a spin-off focusing on a young Han Solo is scheduled for a May 25, 2018 release. Alden Ehrenreich is tapped to play the iconic character in the untitled stand-alone Star Wars film II, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller sitting behind the lens.
