Quentin Tarantino's intention to be as authentic as possible in "The Hateful Eight" backfired. An antique, on loan guitar was accidentally smashed for a scene, and Martin Guitar Museum in Pennsylvania is not happy.

Those who had watched the movie would remember the scene where Kurt Russell grabbed a guitar from Jennifer Jason Leigh and smashed it. It was not a prop guitar, but rather a six-string made in the 1870s. It was reportedly destroyed beyond repair and no amount of money could replace it because it was so rare.

In an interview with SSNInsider, the film's sound designer Mark Ulano said they had several copies of the guitar and the original was to be switched out with a copy before the smashing scene. "Somehow that didn't get communicated to Kurt, so when you see that happen on the frame, Jennifer's reaction is genuine," Ulano said.

Museum director Dick Boak said in a statement, "We were informed that it was an accident on set. We assumed that a scaffolding or something fell on it. We understand that things happen, but at the same time we can't take this lightly. All this about the guitar being smashed being written into the script and that somebody just didn't tell the actor, this is all new information to us. We didn't know anything about the script or Kurt Russell not being told that it was a priceless, irreplaceable artifact from the Martin Museum."

The museum had decided not to loan any of their collection to movies anymore.
