'Supergirl' Casts Its Toyman, EP Explains Major Villain Twist in Series Premiere
TV

Kara's aunt Astra is not the only villain that Supergirl will be battling against in the season as the show is set to feature comic book villains Toyman and Non.

AceShowbiz - Henry Czerny is heading to Metropolis. The veteran actor who starred on ABC's "Revenge" has been cast as Winslow Schott a.k.a. DC Comic villain Toyman on rookie series "Supergirl", ComicBook.com reports. Winslow also happens to be Winn's (Jeremy Jordan) estranged father.

Toyman is the classic Superman and Batman nemesis, who often uses toys and childlike gadgets to spread evil. On the TV series, "Toyman weaponizes toys to wreak destruction and revenge but is ultimately driven by one thing - the obsessive desire to reunite with his beloved son."

The show just debuted on Monday night, October 26 after months of high anticipation, introducing Melissa Benoist as CBS' superheroine. In the series premiere, Kara's aunt Astra (Laura Benanti) is heading to Earth to make Kara pay for the sins of her mother. Astra's face also looks exactly the same with her twin sister and Kara's mom, Alura.

Talking about this twist, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg tells Entertainment Weekly, "We thought it was really exciting that the villain be part of Kara's family that Kara thought was dead. But beyond that, she's her mother's twin sister. Even though it's not her mother, the big bad of the year wears her mother's face. That's certainly going to create emotional issues for Kara when she's placed in situations where, perhaps to save Earth, she's going to have to end her aunt's life."

Kreisberg confirms that Astra's not Kal-El's mother. "She's actually not," he stresses, "If you were really paying attention, you would see that her glyph is not the S. She's from a different house. Alura, Kara's mother, married into the House of El. She is not Lara."

On Astra's motivation to target her own niece Kara, Kreisberg reveals that Astra actually has a noble purpose. He explains, "One of the most interesting things about our show is that everyone is doing what they're doing for the same reasons, they're just going about it in the wrong way. Very soon, when Astra and Kara finally confront each other, Astra says, 'I'm here to save the Earth,' and she'll say, 'I watched one planet die, and I'm not going to do that again.' It's always great when the hero and the villain are two sides of the same coin. Astra's version of saving the Earth is quite different from Kara's."

Following the airing of the first episode, CBS has released an extended promo that gives a look at what to expect in the freshman season. The preview also offers a glimpse of Kara coming face to face with her aunt Astra, in addition to teasing other villains.

"Supergirl" airs Mondays at 8 P.M. ET.
