'Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation' Shines With $56 Million Opening on Box Office

Tom Cruise's action movie topped this weekend box office with $56 million, marking the actor's third biggest domestic opening of all time.

"Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" rocked this weekend box office with $55.5 million debut. Overseas, the tentpole movie launched to $65 million in 40 territories for an early global total of $121 million.

The Tom Cruise-starrer had a record breaking opening in South Korea with $17.1 million. It became the second-best international opening of all time for Paramount after "Transformers: Dark of the Moon". The movie launched to $8.7 million in the U.K, $5.1 million in Mexico and $5 million in Taiwan. "Rogue Nation" also marks Cruise's third biggest domestic opening of all time, behind "War of the Worlds" ($64.9 million) and "Mission: Impossible II".

"This weekend shows that Tom Cruise continues to be a popular star and that 'Mission' continues to be one of the most popular franchises in the U.S. [and] globally," Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said of the movie. "They have delivered a film that has such energy and excitement," he added.

Another new comer, "Vacation", debuted at No. 2 with $14.7 million. The R-rated comedy came below the initial prediction, earning $21.2 million during the five-day opening.

Warners executive vice president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein stayed optimistic with the movie. "Younger audiences gave it the best scores, and the movie also over-indexed in the South and in the middle of the country," he said.

Paul Rudd's "Ant-Man" was still in demand, securing the third place with $12.8 million. After three weeks in theaters, the movie earned a domestic total of $132.1 million and a global haul of nearly $300 million.

In the fourth place was animated comedy "Minions", grossing $12.4 million for a domestic total of $287.3 million and a global total of $854.6 million. As for Adam Sandler's high-budget movie "Pixels", it went down to number five with $10.5 million from 3,723 North America theaters.
