The star and co-creator of the FXX series is replacing original director Shawn Levy who left the project along with screenwriters Kieran and Michele Mulroney.

AceShowbiz - The "Minecraft" movie has found a new director. Rob McElhenney, best known for starring on and co-creating "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", is on board to helm the big-screen adaptation of the popular video game for Warner Bros.
The news was announced on Tuesday, July 21 by Mojang AB, the company behind the massively successful game, via its website. "Some of you may have seen this guy hanging around MINECON in London a couple weeks ago. He's Rob McElhenney, and he's going to be directing the upcoming Minecraft movie," Mojang's COO Vu Bui wrote alongside a photo of McElhenney.
"Minecraft" debuted in 2009 as a game in which players create an environment using textured cubes in a 3D world. Warner Bros. acquired the film rights to it last year. "Night at the Museum" director Shawn Levy was first attached to the project, but he dropped out and brought along screenwriters Kieran and Michele Mulroney with him when he left. The movie has yet to have a release date.
