Kodi Smit-McPhee Hints at Nightcwarler Ties With Mystique in 'X-Men: Apocalypse'

The 'ParaNorman' star confirms he will play a younger Kurt Wagner and says his incarnation will stay true to the comic book.

AceShowbiz - Kodi Smit-McPhee discusses his superhero role in "X-Men: Apocalypse" which is set for May 27, 2016. He opens up that he will play a younger version of Kurt Wagner or Nighcrawler and put his own stamp on it. He additionally teases that all the "traditional" aspects in the comic book will be maintained in the upcoming movie.

"I think I'm really going to make it my own because it is kind of going back and its seeing the younger character. I realize the Nightcrawler that is portrayed in 'X-Men 2' is one that has been through quite a bit more and has really embraced the superhero part of him - a kind of violent part," the actor says to Den of Geek.

"Whereas I think what they're trying to show here is the more vulnerable Nightcrawler and the one we all kind of related to in the comics. It's really the fun, happy, swashbuckling Nightcrawler that we all love, so I really can't wait to portray that. He's just very vulnerable and truthful, and grounded in his faith. I think it's something new though that we'll see. But as I said, all of the traditional things that we want in it - it's still there. Hint, hint," he adds.

In the comic books, Nightcrawler is outed as the son of Mystique who is played by Jennifer Lawrence on the big screen. The indigo-colored mutant has the ability to teleport. He was previously played by Alan Cumming in the second "X-Men" movie in 2003. Lawrence will reprise her role in the next installment. She hinted at her departure from the franchise after the new movie.
