Simon Pegg teases the role Idris Elba is going to play in "Star Trek 3". The returning cast member who wrote the script with Doug Jung opens up that he crafted a badass character who has never been seen before in the series.

"It will be [an original character], yes," Pegg tells MTV News at the CinemaCon. "This is the five-year mission now, we're out there. We don't always have to keep bumping into the same people...It's a massive universe. So we're gonna try and reflect that in the movie. Idris is an extraordinary actor, and we're trying to write him a kickass role."

While the story is still kept under wraps, the actor reveals that they pulled inspiration from "Star Trek" TV series. "We can invest in it the spirit of the show and get back to the essence of what it is, and so what we're hoping to do is make a Star Trek for today that doesn't forget where it came from," he explains.

The third installment of the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise is set to open on July 8, 2016 Stateside. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, and Zoe Saldana reprise their respective roles. J.J. Abrams who directed the first two films sits this one out due to his commitment to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", but he is still involved as a producer. He hands over the reins to Justin Lin.
