'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' Rules Box Office for Third Straight Week

The third and last installment in 'The Hobbit' movie franchise reigns weekend box office with approximately $21.9 million, while 'Into the Woods' trails behind with $19.1 million.

AceShowbiz - "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" once again rules the weekend box office. The last installment of "The Hobbit" movie franchise gives impressive fight against "Into the Woods" and "Unbroken" and wins with an estimated $21.9 million in the U.S. box office, bringing the total earning to $220.8 million on third week.

"Into the Woods" jumps one rung to the second position after raking in an estimated $19.1 million. The star-studded movie which features appearances from %cMeryl Streep%, %cAnna Kendrick%, %cEmily Blunt% and %cChris Pine% among others collected approximately $91.2 million in two weeks. %cAngelina Jolie%-directed movie "Unbroken", which is also on its second week at the box office, falls to the third place after it garnered an estimated $18.4 million.

This week's newcomer, Relativity's "The Woman in Black: Angel of Death", performs well with an estimated $15.1 million after previously being projected to bring in 9 to 11 million dollars. According to exit polls, the audience at the opening consisted of 53|percent| women. 25|percent| of the audience was African American and 24|percent| was Hispanic.

"It's a terrific way to start the new year," said Kyle Davies, president of worldwide distribution at Relativity, as quoted by Variety. "It played broadly. The recent successful horror films have appealed to young females. There's this preconceived notion that horror is always for young males."

"Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb" rounds out the top five with approximately $14.5 million, bringing its total earning to $89.7 million domestically. The rest of the positions are taken by "Annie", %cBenedict Cumberbatch% and %cKeira Knightley%-starring WWII drama "The Imitation Game", "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1", %cMark Wahlberg%-starring "The Gambler" and "Big Hero 6".
