Box Office: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Easily Wins on 4-Day Labor Weekend

The superhero movie remains unbeatable on the box office, ending the holiday weekend with $22.2 million.

AceShowbiz - The four-day Labor Day weekend box office numbers are in. "Guardians of the Galaxy" easily stays on the top spot due to weak holiday competitions, taking in a total of approximately $22.2 million from Friday, August 29 to Monday, September 1.

"Guardians" is expected to end the summer with over $280.5 million domestically and will pass the $300 million mark next weekend as there's no new releases coming ahead. The Marvel movie is the highest-grossing film of 2014 so far but it would only be in the fourth position at the same time in 2013 after "Iron Man 3", "Despicable Me 2", and "Man of Steel".

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" rakes in an estimated $15.7 million over the four-day weekend for a total of $166.4 million, followed by "If I Stay" with approximately $11.6 million. Comedy "Let's Be Cops" and horror flick "As Above, So Below" switch position after the fourth day is counted in. The former clocks in at around $10.6 million while the new entry takes in a total of $10.3 million. Fellow newcomer "The November Man" ends up with approximately $10.2 million over the course of four days.

The calculations for the end of the summer period, counted from May 2 to September 1, are also in. According to Rentrak, this year officially grosses $4.005 billion, down 14.7 percent from last year.
