Juicy J and DJ Paul of Three 6 Mafia have been accused of committing copyright infringement. Billboard reports a rap label owner named Reggie Boyland is suing the duo, claiming two songs he controls have been illegally sampled by Three 6 Mafia in some of their songs.
Boyland, the owner of On The Strength Records and Bank Bag Publishing, filed the lawsuit against Juicy J, DJ Paul and their labels Select-O-Hits, S.A.T. Entertainment Music and Scale-A-Thon Entertainment in Atlanta District Court on August 7.
According to the complaint, he controls "Pimps in the House" and "Listen to the Lyrics" which were both performed and written by rap duo 8Ball & MJG for their debut record "Listen to the Lyrics". The latter song was sampled by Three 6 Mafia in "Where Da Bud" off their second album "Chapter 1: The End".
The same song was also sampled in another Three 6 Mafia track called "Fie It on Up". It was later sampled again in "Where's Da Bud Part 2", another version of "Where Da Bud".
8Ball & MJG, who created the songs, ironically doesn't appear to have anything to do with the suit. The duo previously worked with Three 6 Mafia in 2005's "Stay Fly".
Billboard says Boyland seeks an unspecified amount in damages, as well as an injunction against the defendants' sale of the infringing works and attorney's fees.
