"Rocky" musical follows Tupac Shakur-inspired Broadway play "Holler If Ya Hear Me" to leave The Great White Way early due to lukewarm response. It will play its final performance at the Winter Garden Theatre on August 17 after 28 previews and 188 regular performances.
The stage version of Sylvester Stallone's Oscar-winning film stars Andy Karl as Rocky Balboa and Margo Seibert as his love interest. It features a score by "Ragtime" veterans Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, and a story by Thomas Meehan ("Hairspray") with Alex Timbers directing.
It earned four nominations at this year's Tony Awards and won one for Best Scenic Design, thanks to Christopher Barreca's brilliant set design including a boxing ring that flipped out into the theater's orchestra section. The cast also performed at the Tony Awards in June this year.
However, those nods did little to boost the ticket sales. According to The Associated Press, the play which reportedly cost $15 million to produce broke the $1-million mark only once and lately was making only half its $1,263,688 potential.
