The AMPAS has eliminated the Raja Gosnell-directed film from the list of 18 animated films contending for Oscars because it doesn't match the Short Films and Feature Animation requirement.

AceShowbiz - "The Smurfs" has to bury its dream to compete in Best Animated Feature category at the 2012 Academy Awards. The Raja Gosnell-directed film, which was previously included in top 18 animated films to be considered for the Oscar, has been disqualified by the Short Films and Feature Animation branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
Though the AMPAS hasn't made an official statement on the issue, The Wrap reported that "Smurfs" doesn't meet the Academy's qualification requirement for a live action/animation hybrid movies. The regulation says that "a significant number of the major characters must be animated, and animation must figure in no less than 75|percent| of the picture's running time."
While "Smurfs" was eliminated from the list of 18 Best Animated Feature contenders, another hybrid film "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked" gets the approval to stay on the list. The film will have to compete with 16 other strong contenders such as "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn", "Rango", "Rio", "Happy Feet Two", "Puss in Boots", "Kung Fu Panda 2" and "Cars 2".
On January 24, 2012, The Academy will announce the full nominees, including five chosen films that will compete for Best Animated Feature of 2011. Winners of the most prestigious awards in the motion picture industry will be announced during a ceremony at Kodak Theatre, Los Angeles on February 24, 2012.
