When addressing speculation about his Academy Awards-hosting gig, the '127 Hours' star also tells David Letterman, 'I never dreamed of being, like, the best Oscar host ever.'

AceShowbiz - James Franco has addressed speculations surrounding his co-hosting gig at this year's Academy Awards. Sitting down with David Letterman for the Friday, April 1 episode of "Late Show with David Letterman", the "127 Hours" star joked that it was his co-host Anne Hathaway that made him look like he was stoned when doing his job.

After acknowledging that he has heard people saying he was under the influence, the 32-year-old actor told David he probably knows the reason why. "I've thought about it. I think I know why, because - I love her - but Anne Hathaway is so energetic, I think the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned standing next to Anne Hathaway," he explained with a smile.

On a more serious note, James said, "Truthfully, and I haven't watched it back, maybe I had low energy. I actually played those lines as well as well as I could." Asked why he cared about what people think, he responded, "I never dreamed of being, like, the best Oscar host ever. It was never on my list of things to do. It doesn't mean I didn't care and it doesn't mean I didn't try, right?"

"But here's the hypocritical thing: Leading up the Oscars, I couldn't hear enough about how, 'Oh, people don't care about the Oscars anymore; it's dead, it's boring, it's at the end of a long awards season, who cares about it?' Well, as soon as you don't host the way they want you to, they suddenly care and won't shut up about it!"
