Whoopi Goldberg: I Know Mel Gibson, He's Not Racist
Celebrity

Although recent reports suggest the actor is a racist, the 'Sister Act' star believes that he is not, stating 'I can't sit and say that he's a racist.'

As media points Mel Gibson as a racist following his alleged taped-outburst aimed at his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, Whoopi Goldberg has now raised her voice for the troubled actor. On Monday morning, July 12, the "Sister Act" star blew away her "The View" co-hosts by stating that Mel is not what people think he is.

"I don't like what he did here. But I know Mel, and I know he's not a racist. He may be a bonehead," Whoopi said. "Well, that language certainly sounds racist to me," co-host Joy Behar countered, while Whoopi continued, "I can't sit and say that he's a racist, having spent time with him in my house with my kids... I can't say it."

"So I really need to say that. I don't like what he's done," Whoopi concluded. Whoopi made the statement in a response to Joy's verbal stoning in which she stated, "Give me a break, you're an anti-Semite, you're a misogynist, and you're a racist!," referencing Mel's rant tapes and antisemitic remarks he made during a 2006 arrest for DUI.

Mel Gibson is currently in custody battle against Oksana Grigorieva. His ex-partner and mother of their illegitimate daughter reportedly keeps tapes of Mel launching racist and offensive rant aimed at her. And this isn't the first time Mel has been caught in a racist scandal.

When he was arrested in July 2006 for DUI, Mel made the racist remarks to arresting officer James Mee while the "Braveheart" actor was handcuffed. Mel ranted, "Fucking Jews... the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."
