The screenplay for a new "Spawn" movie is currently being written, the comic books creator Todd McFarlane has made the announcement himself. Taking it to his Twitter account, he wrote down a post on Saturday, August 22, which confirmed that he has officially started working on the new project based on the character.

"I've officially begun writing the SPAWN MOVIE screenplay," McFarlane first tweeted. He further explained that "The story has been in my head for 7 or 8 years." On how he envisions the film will be, he noted, "The movie idea is neither a recap or continuation. It is a stand alone story that will be R-rated. Creepy and scary."

When addressing the tone of the movie, the 48-year-old pointed out that it will be more like Martin Scorsese-directed "The Departed". "...the tone of this 'Spawn' movie will be for a more older audience. Like the film '[The] Departed'," so he claimed in his Twitter post.

Todd McFarlane has previously talked about this new "Spawn" movies, revealing that he wants Leonardo DiCaprio to play a cop who gets involved in the world of Spawn. "The main character isn't Spawn, per se, it's the guy chasing Spawn," he fessed up to MTV News. "And I've always had [Leonardo] DiCaprio in the back of my mind."

At the time, he also mentioned that he aimed for developing the movie as a low-budget film. "It's not a big special-effects movie, it's a character movie, so I could shoot it in 40-50 days and you don't have to budget that much time," so the cartoonist shared when explaining why he has the "Revolutionary Road" lead actor in mind.

As for DiCaprio's character, McFarlane said, "We had Sam and Twitch in the book, but because of some of the stuff I'm trying to sell in Hollywood, we might have to change the characters a bit." He added, "But it would still be a police character who's chasing down a case and in the middle of this 'Godfather'-type movie, something weird is out there and no one knows about it except him and a few other people."
