"Eastern Promises", a 2007 crime drama film starring Viggo Mortensen, is most likely getting a sequel treatment. In a chat with MTV News, director David Cronenberg reveals that he, Mortensen, screenwriter Steven Knight, producer Paul Webster and Focus Features are planning for a follow-up movie. "We are moving forward with it," he gushes. "We all are excited about the idea of doing a sequel."

Sharing more on the sequel plan, the helmer of "A History of Violence" says, "We are going to have a meeting very soon between me, Steve Knight and Paul Webster to discuss what the script would be." He then continues, "I have some very strong ideas about what I would like to see, but I would like to hear what they have to say as well. And then after that, if all goes well, Steve goes away and writes a great script. If we all like it, we make it."

Cronenberg furthermore admits that though he never had desire to make a sequel before, this is the first time he's "ever been in a situation where I actually want to do a sequel to something." On the reason why, he explains, "...in this case, I thought we had unfinished business with those characters. I didn't feel that we had finished with Nikolai and we had done a lot of research that was more than we could stuff into that one movie."

"Eastern Promises" sequel will be focused on Viggo Mortensen's Russian-born gangster character named Nikolai Luzhin as in the end of the original film, it is unraveled that Nikolai is actually working for a British intelligence service. While Nikolai will be the center of the story, it is still unclear whether other major characters, Naomi Watts' Anna or Vincent Cassel's Kirill, will also have parts in the follow-up movie.
