In the quiet suburbs of 1960s Montana, a family’s fragile foundation begins to crumble in this poignant directorial debut from Paul Dano. Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan star as Jerry and Jeanette Brinson, a couple whose strained marriage is pushed to the brink when Jerry loses his job and makes the impulsive decision to fight wildfires for low pay, leaving his wife and teenage son Joe, played by Ed Oxenbould, behind. As Joe watches with growing unease, Jeanette struggles with loneliness and resentment, embarking on a complex journey of self-discovery that challenges the very notions of duty and desire. This intimate and beautifully observed drama captures the seismic shifts within a household through the eyes of a young man coming of age, painting a raw and compassionate portrait of a woman seeking independence and a family grappling with the unpredictable wilderness of the human heart.
