Set against the backdrop of 1965, this heartfelt coming-of-age drama follows Andy Nichol, a bright but awkward eighth-grader played by Chase Ellison, as he navigates the treacherous social waters of junior high. His world is profoundly shaped by his compassionate and principled English teacher, Mr. Simon, portrayed with quiet dignity by Ed Harris. When Mr. Simon pairs Andy with the school’s most socially ostracized student, Stanley, for a major project, Andy is thrust into a conflict that tests his character and challenges the entire school’s capacity for tolerance. Meanwhile, the school simmers with a separate but equally potent controversy involving another teacher, played by Amy Madigan, and the school’s volatile wrestling coach, brought to life by Randy Orton. Directed by Mike Pavone, "That’s What I Am" is a poignant and gentle exploration of dignity, compassion, and the painful yet essential lessons learned on the path to adulthood, reminding viewers that sometimes the simplest virtues are the hardest to uphold.
