In a near-future Los Angeles on the brink of societal collapse, Richard Kelly's sprawling, genre-defying epic weaves a darkly comic tapestry of political intrigue, celebrity culture, and apocalyptic prophecy. The story centers on amnesiac action star Boxer Santaros, played by The Rock, who finds himself entangled with adult film star Krysta Now, portrayed by Sarah Michelle Gellar, as they develop a reality-altering screenplay. Meanwhile, twin brothers Ronald and Roland Taverner, both played by Seann William Scott, become key pawns in a conspiracy involving a powerful corporation, a radical underground movement, and a mysterious new energy source. Through a kaleidoscope of musical numbers, philosophical voiceovers from a scarred soldier (Justin Timberlake), and encounters with a bizarre cast including a political fixer (Miranda Richardson) and a neo-Marxist (Kevin Smith), the film builds toward a chaotic Fourth of July weekend. Blending sci-fi paranoia with satirical comedy and dystopian musical spectacle, Southland Tales presents a hallucinatory vision of American excess where the lines between hero, villain, and celebrity are irrevocably blurred.
