Based on an upcoming memoir by Air Force Major Mary Jennings Hegar, who served three tours in Afghanistan as a rescue helicopter pilot and transported hundreds of soldiers off the battlefield in hot zone areas. During one of those tours, her helicopter was shot down in the midst of a rescue mission.

She got shot by the Taliban, but battled through her injury to save the three Americans she had been sent to rescue, along with her own team. They got out of there in a daring and death defying escape.

Beyond her battlefield heroics that included winning the Purple Heart and becoming only the sixth woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, Hegar successfully waged and won an important battle on U.S. soil: She sued the Department of Defense over the Combat Exclusion Policy that kept women from direct combat. The policy was ruled unconstitutional as a result, and was repealed.
