On the one night of the year when all crime, including murder, is legal for twelve hours, a hardened police sergeant named Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) takes to the streets of Los Angeles with a personal mission of vengeance. However, his path collides with a group of desperate civilians, including a mother and daughter (Carmen Ejogo and Zoe Soul) whose car is attacked by masked purgers, and a married couple (Zach Gilford and Kiele Sanchez) whose breakdown leaves them stranded in the chaos. As the night unfolds, they encounter a mysterious anti-purging resistance led by a man known as Carmelo (Michael K. Williams), who reveals that the annual event is far more sinister than a simple release of societal aggression. Directed by James DeMonaco, this pulse-pounding thriller and horror hybrid expands the terrifying universe of the original film, shifting perspective from the safety of a fortified home to the lawless streets where no one is safe. With relentless tension and visceral action, the film explores themes of class warfare and survival as Leo must choose between his dark intentions and protecting the innocent souls who now depend on him.
