In this taut, 14-minute thriller directed by Leighton Woodhouse, a desperate mother's world shatters when her young son...
In 1970s Philadelphia, a determined swim coach sees potential where others see only a dead end. Terrence Howard stars as Jim Ellis, a college-educated African-American man who takes a job closing down a neglected recreational center, only to discover a group of undisciplined teenagers with raw talent in its abandoned pool. Inspired by their spirit and fighting against the systemic prejudice of the era, Ellis makes the radical decision to stay and form the city’s first African-American swim team. Facing skepticism from the community, including the initially reluctant janitor played by Bernie Mac, and outright hostility from the reigning all-white swim club, Ellis must teach his swimmers about more than just technique; he must instill in them the courage and self-respect that the title promises. This uplifting drama, directed by Sunu Gonera, is a powerful testament to the human spirit, charting the team’s turbulent journey from underdogs to competitors as they dive headfirst into a world that never expected them to make a splash.
