In a raw and intimate documentary, the explosive legacy of punk pioneer Poly Styrene is pieced together by the person who knew her best, yet struggled to understand her most: her daughter, Celeste Bell. Co-directed by Bell and Paul Sng, the film is a poignant excavation of memory, blending archival footage, animation, and Bell’s own personal journey as she grapples with her mother’s brilliant, chaotic life as the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex and her subsequent battles with mental health. Through conversations with cultural icons like Thurston Moore, Kathleen Hanna, and Vivienne Westwood, and narrated by Ruth Negga, a complex portrait emerges of a visionary artist who challenged punk’s macho aesthetic, only to be haunted by fame and her own inner demons. More than a standard music biography, this is a daughter’s quest for reconciliation, exploring the painful chasm between the iconic public figure and the fragile, loving mother, set against the vibrant and tumultuous backdrop of a musical revolution.
