In the nostalgic and sun-drenched summer of 1985, a geeky and self-conscious teen named Rad Miracle (Marcello Conte) finds his world turned upside down during a family vacation to the Maryland beach town of Ocean City. Desperate to fit in and escape the relentless bullying from a local hotshot, Rad discovers an unlikely mentor in a mysterious, reclusive ping pong legend named Randy Jamison, played with cool eccentricity by Susan Sarandon. Under her unconventional tutelage, Rad immerses himself in the fast-paced, sweat-drenched world of basement table tennis, hoping the sport will give him the confidence and skill to win the respect of his peers, particularly a pretty girl (Emmi Shockley). Directed with affectionate retro flair by Michael Tully, this coming-of-age drama and comedy perfectly captures the awkward pangs of adolescence, the importance of friendship, and the transformative power of finding one's passion. With a supporting cast that includes John Hannah, Lea Thompson, and Amy Sedaris, Ping Pong Summer is a quirky, heartwarming, and highly entertaining trip back to a simpler time, where a paddle and a ball could be the keys to a summer of self-discovery.
