In the remote Atlas Mountains of 1990s Algeria, a small community of Cistercian monks lives a life of quiet devotion, tending to their gardens and offering medical aid to the local Muslim villagers. Led by the gentle prior Christian (portrayed by Lambert Wilson), the brothers—including the elderly and wise Luc (played by Michael Lonsdale)—find solace in their daily rituals and deep bonds with the people they serve. But their peaceful existence is shattered when a wave of civil violence erupts across the country, pitting extremist factions against the government and foreign outsiders. As armed militants demand they leave and the army pressures them to accept protection, the monks face an agonizing choice: abandon their calling and the community they love, or remain in faith, knowing their lives hang in the balance. Directed by Xavier Beauvois with a meditative, haunting tone, this profound drama explores the power of conviction, sacrifice, and the fragile beauty of human connection in the face of overwhelming darkness.
