When successful but anxious graphic novelist John Hollar, played by John Krasinski, receives an urgent call from home, his life in New York City grinds to a halt. He returns to his small hometown to find his mother, Sally (Margo Martindale), hospitalized with a serious illness and his father, Don (Richard Jenkins), on the verge of a nervous and financial collapse. Thrust back into the chaotic orbit of his eccentric family, including his expectant ex-girlfriend (Anna Kendrick) and his struggling brother (Sharlto Copley), John is forced to confront the mess he left behind.
