When Sonny West meets Elvis Presley for the first time, his life is altered forever. It's a huge chance for a poor Southern boy to ride with Elvis, go to Hollywood, meet movie stars and live the high life. Being with Elvis means first class treatment wherever they go, but as the pressures grow for Elvis, and he has to face his own disappointments, the ride gets a lot tougher for Sonny, as he has to grow up from the fun loving "little" brother into a trusted companion whom Elvis can lean on, while dealing with the sacrifices he must make in his own life in order to devote himself wholly to Elvis's wellbeing. As a superstar Elvis had to face many losses as well as enjoy many triumphs. He lost the women he most loved, searched for true answers to his spiritual questions, and longed to bring even more to the world that he felt held so much suffering for so many people. By his late thirties these worries were overwhelming and over prescribed medicines were taking a hard toll on his health. When Sonny and Red tried everything they knew to intervene and bring Elvis back to health they found themselves fired and on the outside after seventeen years. The choices they made then, in trying to send the man they loved a message they thought would shake him up, continues to haunt them until this day.
